Windows 7 and Ubuntu's Karmic Koala

Ubuntu 9.10 which is also widely known as Karmic Koala is taking the battle to Microsoft and its new Windows 7 operating system. The Koala brings faster boot times, a new software installer, better disk encryption, online services, and quite a bit more to the popular Linux desktop. The release candidate was taken for a spin and users are happy to report that while work remains, Ubuntu 9.10 has plenty of improvements and that it's worthy upgrading on your current system. For long-time Ubuntu fans, the most recent noticeable change in Karmic Koala will likely be the new Software Center, the graphical utility for package management which come as a replacement for the traditional GNOME Add/Remove tool.

As it stands with the 9.10 release Software Center actually does not really do anything Add/Remove, but the interface is slightly cleaner and will likely be easier for Linux newbies to navigate. More interesting is where Canonical plans to go with Software Center in later releases. The goal is to eventually replace Synaptic, gdebi, some parts of the Computer Janitor, and also the possibility of the Update Manager as well, with the all-in-one Software Center. Ubuntu also plans to offer commercial software via Software Center, though that won't likely happen until version 3.0 - currently Software Center is a 1.0 release. Software Center is considerably cleaner and more seemingly easier for Linux newbies While Software Center looks awesome as is, and Canonical's plans call for an even brighter future, at this time Software Center is essentially a prettier version of the familiar old Add/Remove. Another bright spot in Karmic Koala is distinctively faster boot times. This is an issue which goes beyond Ubuntu, with Microsoft making much of the improvements in Windows to make its latest operating system - Widows 7 - start faster than Windows Vista.

The founder of Ubuntu, Mark Shuttleworth has been looking forward to a scrap with Windows 7 on netbooks and, earlier this year, his company Canonical declared plans to optimize Ubuntu's boot performance. The goal being to get the system up and running a lot faster. But then unfortunately, one won't get to enjoy the fruits in Karmic Koala, but the end goal is to deliver 10-second startups by the time Ubuntu 10.04 is released in 2010. The boot time tests for the final release of Ubuntu 9.10 reflected our earlier experience with the beta release - the average startup time was 26 seconds, with the Xorg starting around the 15-second mark. It can be a little disappointing at times, given that the eventual goal is ten seconds. But then of course it's worth inquiring how often the average user actually boots up Ubuntu. Given its stability, the bulk of Linux users tend to just leave the system running indefinitely, and making the faster boot time of dubious benefit. It could be that the most common use case for quicker boot times are netbooks, where Solid-State hard drives are becoming very common. Netbooks are an area Microsoft banks Windows 7 will do well, compared to Windows Vista. Given that SSDs boot faster anyway, keeping them with Ubuntu's boot optimizations will likely make for some quicker and faster boot times.

Last year Microsoft announced that they would be pulling the plug on Windows XP, users frustrated many who were not big fans of the Windows Vista operating system. However, since this story to many people still using Windows XP on PCs and laptops allowing downgrade rights to Windows Vista.

With the release of Windows 7 scheduled Oct. 22, perhaps this is the end for Windows XP, unlike Windows Vista requirements 7 is not particularly good hardware necessary to install and run the operating system as well.

From the July 21 order OEM downgrade rights, it seems that ending the life of Windows XP, the only way you can get a license of XP will be the purchase from a supplier who still has a balance of it, demand XP license retailers will probably have to sell.

Microsoft is said to still offer XP for Netbooks, this is because some Netbooks hardware will not run any more advanced operating systems sufficiently.

Tips to Logging on with the Caps Lock Key

Don't worry about having the Caps Lock key down when logging into your Windows XP account. This post provide technical support tips to login with CPS lock key.

This isn't necessarily a tip but an interesting piece of information.

With earlier versions of Windows, have you ever had trouble entering your login password because your CAPS LOCK key was down and you didn't know it? You know the frustration that occurs when you type your password several times in a row, get locked out of the machine for a while, and mutter to yourself unmentionables until you finally notice the green or red CAPS LOCK LCD is lit?

Well, with Windows XP, that shouldn't happen again. Next time you logon your machine (if it is password protected, of course), intentionally press the CAPS LOCK key. You'll see a popup balloon onscreen telling you the CAPS LOCK key is on and you should turn the key off because it might hamper entering your password.

Thanks, Microsoft. Granted, this problem has been going on for years with just about all Windows versions, but you got it right this time.

Keep malfunctioning Windows XP software from fix computer problems to a halt.

If an application hangs in Windows XP, you may be able to stop it manually by opening up Task Manager. Note that you should only do this if you have tried everything else to restart the software in question. Also, closing software using Task Manager may erase all unsaved data in the program in question.

To pull up the Task Manager, try one or more of the following:

1) Right-click on an empty area of the Windows XP toolbar and choose "Task Manager".
2) If that fails to work, press CONTROL-SHIFT-ESC.
3) If that fails to work, try CONTROL-ALT-DEL.

If Task Manager starts, click on the "Applications" tab. Right-click on the program that is not responding and choose "End Task". Follow the instructions if prompted. You may have to force an application to stop two or three times.

Task Manager is a last resort, but if your computer or a software program hangs, it may be the only way to restore access to your machine without a reboot.

Windows XP's Remote Desktop Connection works great if you are connecting to a remote computer via a cable modem or DSL, but you can still optimize the experience to work acceptably well for modem connections.

Access the Windows XP Remote Desktop Connection tool. Click the "Options" button to access advanced options. Click "Open" if you wish to modify an existing session name.

Click the "Experience" tab. Now, underneath "Choose your connection speed to optimize computer performance", click the pull-down to choose the speed with which you are able to connect to the Internet. Here's a tip: If you don't mind colors that are a little off or don't care to see the remote desktop's backdrop, choose a connection speed that is slower than your actual connection.

Optionally, you can uncheck the boxes to disable the following: the remote desktop background, window contents while dragging, menu and window animation, themes, and the desktop background. Personally, I would turn all of these options off unless I had a really fast and stable network connection.

When you are done with your settings, click the "General" tab. Click "Save As" to re-save your session with the new settings, or just go ahead and access a computer remotely by clicking the "Options" menu to hide the advanced settings, then enter the computer name and click "Connect".

2. Make the toolbar always appear on top of other windows by right-clicking the toolbar and checking "Always on top".

3. Or, make the toolbar only visible whenever you move your mouse to the toolbar's edge of the screen. Right-click the toolbar and check "Auto-Hide".

4. To remove the toolbar, right-click it and choose "Toolbars", then uncheck "My Computer".

How to manually configure Windows XP in Clean Boot State

Manually starting XP with a clean boot (advanced user only) This section is intended for advanced computer users. If you are not comfortable with advanced troubleshooting, you might want to ask someone for windows help or contact Support

Step 1: Start the System Configuration Utility

1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig, and then click OK.
2. The System Configuration Utility dialog box is displayed.

Step 2: Configure selective startup options

1. In the System Configuration Utility dialog box, click the General tab, and then click Selective Startup.
2. Click to clear the Process SYSTEM.INI File check box.
3. Click to clear the Process WIN.INI File check box.
4. Click to clear the Load Startup Items check box. Verify that Load System Services and Use Original BOOT.INI are checked.
5. Click the Services tab.
6. Click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box.
7. Click Disable All, and then click OK.
8. When you are prompted, click Restart to restart the computer.

Step 3: Log on to Windows

1. If you are prompted, log on to Windows.
2. When you receive the following message, click to select the Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows start check box, and then click OK.

Notes
  • You have used the System Configuration Utility to make changes to the way Windows starts.
  • The System Configuration Utility is currently in Diagnostic or Selective Startup mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run every time Windows starts.
  • Choose the Normal Startup mode on the General tab to start Windows normally and undo the changes you made using the System Configuration Utility.

Step 4: Optional step to disable features
If the clean boot fixed the error, you do not have to perform this step.

Important If your problem is not fixed and you do have to follow this step, it permanently removes all restore points from your computer. The System Restore feature uses restore points to restore your computer to an earlier state. If you remove the restore points, you can no longer restore Windows to an earlier state.

This step temporarily disables Microsoft features such as Plug and Play, networking, event logging, and error reporting.

1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig, and then click OK.
The System Configuration Utility dialog box is displayed.
2. Click the General tab, click to clear the Load System Services check box, and then click OK.
3. When you are prompted, click Restart to restart the computer.

If these steps helped you start your computer in a clean-boot state, you are finished. If these steps did not help, go to the “Next Steps” section. If you have to return your computer to a normal startup state, go to “Steps to configure Windows to use a Normal startup state”.

How to copy music to and from an audio CD in Windows XP

This post describes how to copy music from an audio CD to the computer's local hard disk by using Windows Media Player (WMP). You can then copy the data back to an audio CD if you want to. This post provide windows media player support to copy data from CD to Hard Drive.

Copy music files from an audio CD

1. Insert the Audio CD and start Windows Media Player.
2. If WMP is in Skin mode, press CTRL+1 to view WMP in Full mode.
3. Click Copy from CD. Or, on the File menu, you can click Copy, click Copy from Audio CD, and then choose the drive from which you want to copy.
4. Click to select each audio file that you want to copy. By default, all files that you have not already copied are selected.
5. Click Copy Music. This copies the file into the My Documents\My Music folder by default.


Copy audio files from the hard disk to an audio CD

1. In Windows Explorer, choose the files that you want to copy to the audio CD, and then click the Copy to Audio CD Web View task.
2. In WMP, verify that the files that you wish to copy are in the playlist and that they are selected.
3. Click Copy Music.

Note: You can copy .wma, .mp3, and .wav file types to an audio CD.
