AT&T to Enter in-home PC Repair Business

Wednesday, September 10, 2008

AT&T is getting into the in-home computer repair business as part of its new ConnecTech service that it launched nationwide last week.

The company, which provides wireless and landline phone and Internet service -- and now Internet-based television service -- said the market for in-home computer repair canada and home theater setup and technical support services is worth $1 billion.

Despite the entry of a giant like AT&T into the in-home computer repair business, local independent providers like Robert Garcia don't expect to see much if any impact to their businesses.

Garcia, whose company, Sensible Tech Solutions, has been in business for two years, says he hasn't been hurt by other larger and national competition such as Best Buy's Geek Squad service.

"I don't feel like it has," Garcia said.

He said being a locally owned company counts for a lot, especially when he gets "cold calls" from customers.

That is what Alex Harb, owner of Ribbit Computers, thinks, too.

"We're local, we're here, we'll help you right away," Harb said.

AT&T spokeswoman Chelsey Ilten said customer requests prompted development of the service.

She said the service will be provided by AT&T technicians and technicians under contract with the company.

Cost of AT&T's ConnecTech service starts at below $100, a company news release said.
A check of similar services offered by about a dozen competitors in the area showed that some offer services beginning at $75.

Monterey Park firm specializes in recycling discarded electronics

Wednesday, September 3, 2008

Nearly all of us have it. That old TV sitting in the garage, that out-of-date computer stashed neatly in the back of the walk-in closet, those beat-up cell phones, the out-of-date VCRs ...

All told, the nation is home to about 500 million pounds of electronic waste. But many businesses and homeowners don't know where to go to get rid of the stuff.

That's where TW Electronics Recycling Inc. comes in.

The Monterey Park-based business will dispose of your old television, computer monitor, laptop, printer, metal scraps and other electronic gear - free of charge.

"The recycling industry is basically divided into two different categories, facilitators and destruction centers," TW owner Phil Yen explained. "We're a facilitator. We'll go pick up your stuff for free. And if a company wants to establish a relationship with us, we'll provide all the logistics as well as the pallets and recycling bins."

TW Electronics Recycling gathers up the discarded electronics gear and ships the material off to one of the Southland's various destruction facilities.

So instead of going to a landfill, most parts and materials are sorted out and reused. Hazardous materials - such as the lead in CRT screens - are likewise sorted and recycled.

Sonny Tran, owner of the SunTech computer repair canada shop in San Pedro, has used TW Electronics Recycling on several occasions.

"They have a drop-off location and now they also have guys that will come out and pick up the stuff," Tran said. "I also have an electronics drop-off center where people drop off stuff with me. I've partnered with TW Electronics and they come and pick it up." TW operates four locations.

They include:

The main warehouse, 721 Monterey Pass Road, Monterey Park
San Gabriel Recycling Host, 1629 S. Del Mar Ave., San Gabriel
Long Beach Recycling Host, 2278 Easy Ave., Long Beach
Santa Monica Recycling Host, 1438 17th St., Santa Monica
TW Electronics Recycling, a division of Gardena-based Teverden Inc, is a state-certified recycling company approved by the California Integrated Waste Management Board.
The business is a participant in California's SB20/50 payment program. TW takes in about 40,000 pounds of electronics per month for recycling.
"California pays us about 43 cents a pound and we split that with the destruction facility," Yen said. "We end up getting about 23 cents a pound."

TW also pays customers 5cents a pound for materials that are dropped off at the company's Monterey Park facility.

"We're trying to find as many customers as possible and get the word out," said Tia Fang, TW's account manager. "We really have to let people know that they can bring in their electronics and get cash for their trash."

TW's business clients include Total Terminal International, a container management company at the Port of Long Beach; Telasic Communications; the Power Nissan auto dealership in Torrance; and Konica Minolta, a leading printing and copying company, among others.

Computer Repair Technician - A Definition

Monday, September 1, 2008

A computer repair technician is a person who repairs and maintains computers and servers. The technician's responsibilities may extend to include building or configuring new hardware, installing and updating software packages, and creating and maintaining computer networks. Computer repair technicians work in a variety of settings, encompassing both the public and private sectors. Because of the relative newness of the profession, institutions offer certificate and degree programs designed to prepare new technicians, but computer repairs are frequently performed by experienced and certified technicians who have little formal training in the field.

A repair technician might work in a corporate information technology department, a central service center, or a retail computer sales environment. A public sector technician might work in the military, national security or law enforcement communities, health or public safety field, or an educational institution. Despite the vast variety of work environments, all computer technicians perform similar physical and investigative processes, including technical support.

Experienced technicians might specialize in fields such as data recovery, system administration, or information systems. Some technicians are self-employed or own a firm that provides services in a regional area. Some are subcontracted as freelancers or consultants. This type of technician ranges from hobbyists and enthusiasts that volunteer or make a little side money, to those who work professionally in the field.

The repair of problems can range from a minor setting that is incorrect, to spyware, viruses, and as far as replacing hardware or an entire operating system. Some technicians provide on-site services usually at an hourly rate. Others can provide services off-site, where the client can drop off at the repair shop. Some have pickup and drop off services for convenience. Some may also take back old equipment for recycling.
